New Species of Bat Discovered

Scientists in Madagascar have discovered a new species of bat that has suckers attached to its thumbs and hind feet. This new bat, Myzopoda schliemanni, becomes only the second member of a family of rare bats that are only found in Madagascar. The other species in the family, Myzopoda aurita, is found in the wet eastern portion of the country, while the new bat is found in the dry western forests of the island nation.

The discovery of this second species takes the Myzopoda family off the endangered species list since it is now known that they can adapt well to the large broad-leaf plants that appeared after the original forests were destroyed.

Since the newly discovered bats have similar features to the previously-known species, researchers suggest that one evolved from the other as they spread across the island, adapting to their new surroundings.
