Endangered Brook Trout Breeding in Mountain Pond USA
Scientists are breeding the endangered brook trout species at Mountain
Pond New York under a Department of Environmental Conservation program.
This species has become endangered owing to agriculture, damming, logging
and industrial pollution (acid rain). Rivers in the Saranac Lake Wild
Forest area have seen this species fall from 94% brook trout to only
3%.
Controversially, the chemical rotenone was used to kill all fish in
Mountain Pond before restocking work. Rotenone has the capacity to kill
all gill-breathing creatures.
