Hawaii's Endangered Animals Under Attack from Invaders
Hawaiian native animals
are under threat from a wide range of invading species that are threatening
across the islands.
Some species including wild horses, cattle, goats and feral felines
had been deliberately introduced for hunting purposes. Some species
have arrived accidentally onto the islands e.g. the Puerto Rican coqui
frog. Years later, these species anr now causing trouble for native
creatures.
Between 300 and 500 species are causing damage to animal and plant life
in Hawaii. A pack of 4 dogs were hunted and killed after they were held
responsible for over 100 deaths of wedge-tailed shearwaters at Ka'ena
Point State Park. Native plants have also proed vulnerable to foraging
by some of the invaders.
