Proposals To Help Eliminate Nuisance Aligators

South Carolina May Open Door To Gator Hunts

Aligator South Carolina could soon be saying goodbye to hundreds of alligators if it decides to join other states that allow hunting of the animals.

S.C. wildlife officials plan to introduce legislation shortly that will allow a limited alligator hunting season to root out nuisance alligators and provide a new recreational outlet.

South Carolina's alligator population is estimated at about 100,000, double the number it was in 1970. As the numbers have increased, the state has allowed removing nuisance alligators and some hunting on certain private lands. The state receive around 500 alligator complaints each year and permits the removal of up to 200 annually.

The proposal already has the support of the Dept. Of Natural Resources and some lawmakers.
