Endangered Species Find New Home On The Range A species of antelope has been helped along with mountain goats and Oryx thanks to a scheme from the Isreali military. Eland, Africa's largest species of antelope, the rare desert oryx and Atlas mountain goats are among the species to have benefited from the brainwave of Major Cohen. The
Major persuaded his seniors to give a home to eight greying eland and
set them free within the heavily patrolled perimeter fences of a military
exercise area. The Eland are content to graze on the scrubland surrounding
bases of the Israel Defence Force. They keep the level of vegatation stable
so that bushfires cannot take hold. The fires are a constant threat to
ammunition and explosive stores.
Now the Eland are thriving, their numbers have risen to 400 and they have been joined by oryx and mountain goats from North Africa. The animals must be happy because they have started breeding again. The mountain goats are an endangered species in their natural habitat. The Isreali military have now sent 30 to Mali where they were on the verge of extinction. More Animal News
