Red Fox Migration Threatens Tasmanian Species
The red fox
is feared to have migrated 125 miles across sea to invade the island
of Tasmania where they will have the capacity to prey on endangered
animals.
Animals at risk on Tasmania include quolls, bettongs and bandicoots. These species have already succumbed to fox attacks in Australia.
It is not clear whether red foxes have survived an introduction many
years ago and are only now showing in larger numbers owing to more favourable
conditions prevailing. Or, possibly some other introduction may have
taken place without proper control.
Tasmania devils still survive on the island but are an endangered species
in themselves, currently falling victim to disease which has eradicated
80% of the numbers.
