Woman Traded Endangered Animal Parts A Chinese "doctor" is in court for selling bear bile, antelope and rare orchids to try and cure a range of medical problems. The woman, who has no medical qualifications, sold dozens of products made from endangered species to people who entered a medical centre in Baker Street, London. Potions and tablets bearing claims they can cure paralysis, sexual problems, poor sleep and fever were seized by police. Many were made from ingredients banned under a worldwide agreement and European law. The woman ran the shop for six years and denies ten charges of offering for sale specimens of controlled species as per Control of Trade in Endangered Species regulations. Police raided the premises in October 2005 where they found a large quantity of medicines containing musk deer, antelope horn and bear bile. All of the plants and animals are either in danger of extinction or regulated because of a growing threat to their existence. Some of the products are subject to a trade ban. The woman said she aquired the products in a number of ways. Some were sent from China. One product containing musk deer was bought from a woman running a food shop. A treatment containing bear bile was sent from China by her parents. A product containing antelope horn was ordered from another customer. More Animal News
